Development journey

Flooding in England

From concept to commercial delivery, CENTAUR® delivers.

From its conception in 2014, through funded research and collaboration, CENTAUR® has been refined into a robust, industry adopted solution to create equivalent storage to protect storm overflows. Through early installations and evolving technology, CENTAUR® has become a ‘go to’ solution for network optimisation within the UK water sector.

Example UK deployments

CENTAUR® – Southern Water

CENTAUR® was introduced on the Isle of Wight to create performance benefit at discharges into Cowes Harbour. Focussing on spill management upstream whilst protecting another overflow downstream, CENTAUR® successfully reduced spills from 76 in 2023 to 3 in 2024 against a predicted spill frequency of 144.

CENTAUR® multi-gate system operational in Scottish Water, Kirkcaldy

Protecting the storm overflow with two gates, the Kirckaldy site is providing over 200m3 of storage, reducing spill volumes by up to 25%, the target objective for Scottish Water.

Solar impulse efficient solution badge

2020

The Solar Impulse Foundation has reached 1000 solutions, and CENTAUR® made the list

CENTAUR® is labelled as one of the 1000 solutions contributing in a profitable way towards a greener planet.

REWAISE logo

2020

The project received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme

REWAISE (REsilient WAter Innovation for Smart Economy) – a European Union’s Horizon 2020 research-funded project, which aims to reduce water consumption, and achieve a zero-carbon water cycle through a smart water ecosystem. We worked closely with Severn Trent Water as the project partner.

Eureka Eurostars and Innovate UK logos

2020

The project was awarded funding as part of the Eureka Eurostars funding, with UK contribution from Innovate UK

In partnership with the University of Coimbra (Portugal), Aguas de Coimbra and the University of Sheffield, we installed extra gates in Coimbra, Portugal, to complement the gate already in place and protecting the town square.

WIA Winner 2018

2018

Water Industry Awards 2018 Winner

CENTAUR® technology was awarded as the ‘Most Innovative New Technology of the Year’ at the 2018 Water Industry Awards, an event that celebrates and rewards outstanding achievement and innovation in the UK water industry.

Coimbra, Portugal

2017

A pilot system of CENTAUR® was installed and successfully tested in Coimbra, Portugal

In partnership with the University of Coimbra (Portugal), Aguas de Coimbra and the University of Sheffield, the project was awarded funding as part of the Eureka Eurostars-2 funding, with UK contribution from Innovate UK. We installed extra gates in Coimbra, Portugal, to complement the gate already in place and protecting the town square. We implemented a further multi-gate IWAN with Scottish Water in the UK. The first system that we installed in Coimbra has successfully protected the Church of Santa Cruz in the Praça Oito de Maio, which is a World Heritage Site, since 2018.

Lab rig

2016

A Real Time Control Testing facility (RTC RIG) was developed to test the CENTAUR® system and set up at the University of Sheffield

It was adapted to test different control strategies, sensing systems and data strategies, and to evaluate how all of these can affect the performance of RTC CSO spill mitigation techniques.

Horizon 2020 EU funding

2014

The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme

CENTAUR® was initially developed by a consortium of universities, water companies and technology SMEs under a €3.5m EU Horizon 2020 project. It is only through the combination of this expertise and through the use of world-leading research facilities that this system has been realised.
